Responding to the Challenge With Effective Physical Therapy Interventions
At some point, we will all have a physical disability or have a close family member with one.
Unfortunately, many people with a physical disability do not have access to the healthcare they need. They have too many barriers to physical activity.
Another concern is that insurance has time limits, so those affected are unable to improve movement or get better. The current healthcare system isn’t designed to help us reach optimal recovery or realize our potential.
This is where MWH comes in. We provide the experienced physical therapists you need to improve your health and mobility outcomes.
Take Advantage of the Opportunity to Improve Your Mobility
Have your doctors told you that you’ve plateaued? We will prove otherwise! Before MWH, many of our clients spent 2 to 10 years in unproductive therapy sessions.
We apply the latest research using our decades of experience. And this is why our evidence-based results are life-changing for our clients.
Science proves that everyone gets stronger by moving. Therefore, people with physical disabilities just need the right equipment and lots of expert care and time.
“The idea is finally catching hold that rehab on its own can help people recover.”
The Solution: Expert Physical Therapy
MWH provides a Continuum of Care. We have skilled physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech-language therapy (ST) professionals. But many of our programs work outside of insurance.
We use the right tools, the right technology, and the right people. Plus, MWH connects all stakeholders to provide optimal physical therapy healthcare.
MWH also offers financial aid and other forms of support. You can take advantage of our social groups, skills and job training, and much more.
At MWH, we make people happier, healthier, and more independent
A Continuum of Care
What does it take for a person with a physical disability to always be getting better? Our Continuum of Care model means support for people at every step of post-acute recovery.
It begins with the clients we serve.
Every person’s experience and life is unique. We work with each client and their caregivers to develop a plan tailored to their needs, goals, and budget.
What is our Continuum of Care?
Everyone needs physical activity for good health.
That’s why we start by making regular movement possible with our sliding scale fee. Every client gets 6+ hours of exercise, rehab, and other support strategies each week. Most come year-round.
As clients regain strength, many learn how to use assistive technology. This helps all of us accomplish more. For clients, it facilitates their ability to learn, participate, and thrive in today's digital world.
Nationwide, we are the only organization that gives this level of support. MWH is flipping the script and transforming lives.
MWH empowers people in their journey towards health, independence, and happiness. Whether you need long-term care, help to manage a chronic illness, or support after acute care or injury, we are here for you.
Steps Towards Self-Sufficiency
Our goal is for our clients to continuously improve their lives. We support their goals, remove barriers, and build the foundation to make this possible.
Movement is fundamental. We give all clients full access to rehab and exercise all year:
- PT, OT, and ST are paid with private or federal insurance or through financial aid.
- All other services are paid with a private pay sliding scale fee, always $0 to $55 per hour.
We adopt low pricing as comparable clinics charge $100+ per hour.
We provide the right resources, tools, and technology so our clients feel secure and connected:
- Wheelchairs, gear, and other medical necessities
- Assistive technology
- Reliable transportation
- Orthotic and wheelchair repair
We help our clients plan their path forward while supporting them with hope and joy along the way. You can take advantage of our:
- Mentoring and counseling
- Social groups and events
- Skills training
- Job placement assistance
Our adaptive exercise programs support the health and wellness goals of clients.
What is adaptive exercise?
Adaptive exercise is exercise that is adapted or modified for people living with disabilities. The adaptations help people living with disabilities achieve the same outcomes, such as improved flexibility, strength, or endurance.
Sometimes, special gear is used. More often, equipment found in a typical gym is used.
Our adaptive exercise programs include:
- Weightlifting and Conditioning
- Flexibility and Balance
- Wheelchair Yoga
Clients and guests always exercise with the support or supervision of 1-2 trained staff members.
Adaptive exercise strengthens muscles, bones, and joints that are functional. It does not treat or improve injury or illness.
In your wheelchair:
Adaptive exercise is often performed in the safety of your wheelchair or with the devices you use at home. Adaptive sporting events, like the Paralympics, follow this same principal.
Classes and group fitness:
Adaptive exercise is fun and for everyone. Friends, family, and the public can sign up through our Integrated Wellness Service.
“In my 36 years as an RN, I didn’t know PT and OT were so limited for people living with physical disabilities. Then, I had a stroke. I lost 6 years of my life. My therapy benefits were so short that I never got better.
I’m stronger now, and just passed my nursing refresher courses. I’ll be working as a telenurse next summer. . . but I’ll always be Moving With H.O.P.E.”
— Mary, Moving With H.O.P.E. since 2017
Physical therapy is an essential part of every recovery. Skilled physical therapists will evaluate and treat injuries to the muscles, bones, joints, and nervous system
These programs supplement skilled therapy. It is not PT, OT, or ST. Furthermore, insurance doesn’t cover the cost.
Moving With Hope Offers Three Key Areas of Support
MWH leverages all types of therapy and offers our clients 6+ hours of evidence-based rehab. We do this every week, year-round, in 3 key areas:
- Mobility & Physical Functions
- Activities of Daily Living
- Communication, Learning, & Socialization
Mobility & Physical Functions
Physical Therapy (PT) is used to improve a client’s physical functions through examination, diagnosis, and rehabilitation. Our team can address conditions including orthopedic injuries, neck and back pain, neurological injuries, and balance.
Activity-Based Restorative Therapy (ABRT) at MWH works to reactivate and reorganize the central nervous and muscular system to improve mobility and functionality. Over many months, ABRT minimizes clients' compensatory strategies. For example, ABRT helps people transition from a walker to a single-point cane.
ABRT has 3 simple principles for successful outcomes:
- Maximize weight bearing onto the legs.
- Optimize verbal and tactile cues.
- Optimize the speed of movements.
We also offer Exercise Therapy and Massage Therapy programs.
Activities of Daily Living
Occupational Therapy (OT) is often needed to get clients back to performing their daily duties with more independence. We help clients with skills such as dressing themselves, using tools, bathing, and cooking.
Independent Living Skills Training (ILST) at MWH is a real-world application of ABRT, Exercise Therapy, and Adaptive Exercise. We maximize movements towards more independence in areas such as:
- Sitting, standing, and pivoting onto chairs, toilets, and beds.
- Walking independently.
- Getting down onto or up from the floor independently.
- Toileting, bathing, dressing, and using tools.
We have a locker room!
We have a roll-in accessible shower with adult changing table and personal lockers for client use and training. This feature is available only in nursing homes and hospitals.
Communication, Learning, & Socialization
Speech-Language Therapy (ST) aids a client's ability to talk, eat, and swallow safely. Our team can help strengthen the muscles in the face, mouth, and throat. We also help clients improve memory, problem-solving, safety awareness, attention, and language.
Cognitive and Language Programing at MWH is designed to help clients improve their thinking and communication skills. We use a computer-based learning program, assistive technology, and 1:1 tutoring to teach and reinforce:
- Cognitive Functioning
- Speaking, Writing, and Typing
- Social-Emotional Learning
